3rd Grade "Evening with the Authors" a Great Success

On Tuesday, April 13th, 3rd grade students, parents, guardians and teachers came out to the newly renovated KES library to attend Evening with the Authors! The event consisted of students reading their published pieces to family and friends (and of course, food.) The media center was humming with the sounds of student voices, laughter, and lots of clapping--way to go, 3rd grade! We are all very proud of the hard work you put in to making your writing successful!

On Monday, the students of room 122 enjoyed Haiku writing out in the courtyard. We used the spring afternoon as our writing inspiration. Check out the video!

Service Projects Benefit KES and Beyond

Last week, the students in room 122 began self selected community service projects as a means of exploring our social studies curriculum.

Around the school, you could find our students hanging up posters for the "Pennies for Change" drive for Haiti, planting flowers, reading a favorite book to a kindergarten class, or picking up litter in the 4th of July Park.

Other students opted to complete their projects at home. No matter where the service took place, each of the students made a difference in their community! Thank you, Gators!

"Pennies for Change" Update

Our "Pennies for Change" drive to raise money for Haiti Earthquake relief is off to a great start. After only 1 week, the Kernersville family has collected 45,000 pennies, or $450.00--wow!

If you would like to make a direct donation to the American Red Cross, follow the link below and make a difference.

Let's keep bringing in the change to support the American Red Cross' efforts in Haiti. Have a great Spring Break!

Talk about 'Dem Bones

The students in room 122 have been learning a lot about the human body in the last few weeks. In preparation of our field trip to Millis Regional Health Education Center, the students did a number of activities related to the skeleton. In these pictures, students show off their marshmallow creatures, that wouldn't have existed without the aid of their (toothpick) skeletons! In order to learn more about joints, students used K'nex to explore this element of our skeleton (hinge, ball and socket, and gliding). We learned a groovy new dance to help us learn the bones. Ask your student to perform for you at home!
"The cranium (skull!), connects to the mandible (jawbone!), connects to the clavicle......."

It's science--we out.

Pennies for Change

The Gators are working to start a school-wide "Pennies for Change" drive to raise money for Haiti Relief. Spare change will be collected in KES classrooms and counted each week. Our school goal is 250,000 pennies, or $2,500.

Can we do it?

Let's rise to the occasion and help our brothers and sisters in Haiti!

"Writing Life Stories" A Huge Success

On Monday, March 8th, parents, guardians, family members and friends came to room 122 to hear our students read their biographies.

The days leading up to the event were bustling, filled with drafting, editing, and publishing their own pieces!

We want to send out a big thank you to everyone who was able to attend (family, friends, and school staff), and to those people who shared their stories with us.

It was a powerful experience and a great way of bring the Kernersville Elementary School community closer together. Thanks again!

Writing Life Stories in Writer's Workshop!

This week, we have conducted an intense genre study of biographies. We've read a few biographies of famous people (Cesar Chavez, Ruby Bridges, Mae Jemison), but we thought it was time to write a few of our own! Students have worked very hard this week to select, interview, and write the biography of a person that is important to them. Here are some pictures from the week.

On Monday, March 8th, we have invited these special people to come in and listen during the author's chair sharing session. All are welcome to join! The biography reading starts at 8am and runs for 1 hour. Donuts, juice, and stories will be provided. See you there!

The Blog Prince

This week, we kicked off a reading and writing unit on fairy tales! We will be looking at fairy tales from around the world as we engage in several in-class reading and writing activities. Here are some pictures of our fairy tale book investigation. Do you see any that you know?

Soil and Composting Unit Comes to a Close!

We have just finished up a unit on soil and composting. The Gators conducted soil investigations, science experiments, and did a week's worth of centers on worm composting. Currently, we have 1,000 red wiggler worms in our classroom that are composting our food scraps from lunch. We are making a difference by reducing our daily food waste and making natural fertilizer! This helps us to understand the relationship between soil and the decomposition process. Above is a picture of the paper mache worm models we made. Check out Vermi the Worm in the "Game Zone!" page to see what goes on inside our Worm Farm!
